Jesus was born in Bethlehem? Which was a torturous several day journey from Nazareth? Especially for a pregnant lady? Sounds more like a wild story to reconcile the city-of-David prophecies.

And Nazareth was a small Jewish village in Galilee? GREEK!!! Where did Jesus mostly preach? Capernaum. GREEK!!! Who was his #1 disciple when it came to spreading the word? Paul, GREEK!!!

Remember, Jesus spoke in parables. The entire story isn't so much of a real history as it is a history of our faith: Why we believe what we believe. Personally, I think the story speaks well despite after-influences of the Romans, King James, etc. I am proud to be a Christian. But I don't believe that Jesus was born in Bethlehem for a minute.
