I had a relative, John Surratt, who fled the US after he was implicated in the Lincoln assassination plot. He was later found working as a Papal guard at the Vatican.

His mother, who owned the boarding house where the plotters met, was hanged for her part. She was convicted by the military tribunal set up to prove the plot was wide-reaching. And she was the only woman ever hanged by the US.

John, meanwhile, was returned to the US, tried in a proper civilian court, and found not guilty.
